A Note from the Regent
Welcome back as we embark upon another year of continuing our mission and service to our Lord under the guidance of our Blessed Lady. We hope that everyone had a refreshing summer break in spite of the drought and troubling economic times.
This past year we were blessed with many significant successes that were only possible through love and cooperation of everyone. Together we accomplished a lot as we grew deeper in faith to our Lord and our Church community. For all the successes in the world will have no meaning if they do not strengthen our faith. I enjoin everyone to continue in this spirit of love, cooperation, and understanding as we work upon another year of our courts ministry.
In this issue some articles from Share Magazine, summer 2009 are summarized to remind the membership of their contents and applicability to our mission. The National Regents message on teamwork is very much alive in our court as shown by our courts participation in the recent Shrimp and Fish Dinner. The article on Volunteering reminds us that the spirit of volunteerism comes naturally from all members. I hope this summary will entice you to retrieve your summer 2009 issue of the Share Magazine and review the other articles.
Lately, we have experienced a loss of a number of Catholic Daughters and their family members. Let us continue to remember them in our thoughts and prayers.

Teamwork is the Key to EffectiveService

(Eds Note: Some articles from the issue of Share Magazine, Summer, 2009 are hereby summarized)
Page 1 Excerpts from the National Regents Message on Teamwork..
.. We are all different and we all have special gifts given to us by God. You are all urged to support the new state leadership. Use your gifts for the betterment of our organization. In order for a local court or a state court to function at its best, it is imperative that teamwork be implemented. The Catholic Daughters cannot be an effective organization without teamwork present on every single level.
Page 4.Excerpts from the National Clergy Consultant on Defending Devotion to Mary
Father Ruppert dissected the Hail Mary, a prayer most popular for Mary saying the first half of the prayer should not be difficult for any Christian to accept since it consists of two direct quotes from Sacred Scripture: the salutation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary at the Annunciation and Elizabeths greeting when Mary arrived for the Visitation. The second part of the Hail Mary was added by the church.
Page 13 Multi-District Retreat seeks Face of God. We thank Terri Vacek for the wonderful article and pictures. We understand the editors of Share Magazine had to shorten the article because we know Terri described the whole event in detail in another article. Incidentally, can you identify yourself in the group picture?
Page 16 ..On Volunteering
Anne Nelson, First Vice National Regent said: Volunteering comes naturally to Catholic Daughters. Its what we do, and we do it prayerfully and with reverence. ..
Libby Ramirez, National Regent summarized the conference this way: We were glad to learn different perspectives on volunteering. It didnt make me want to change anything about the way Catholic Daughters volunteer. I think our attitude toward volunteering is very positive and weve been doing a good job of it for more than a hundred years.
Page 14 Fighting the Aid in Dying
Washington State Initiative by Lisa Jensen, Washington State Regent. When the Governor of Washington State filed the Aid in Dying Initiative (I 1000) on January 9, 2008 , the Catholic Daughters of this State went into action. To place the measure on the November ballot, 224,880 signatures were needed.
The Catholic Daughters worked hard and made the proper connections to alert the everyday people so that they will not sign the petition. However, at the end of July, it was learned that there was enough signatures and that Initiative 1000 would be in the ballots in the November election. The State Regent and the past State Regent became more aggressive in their campaign at this point.
(Read the article for the campaign made to prevent this issue from materializing).
In the end, despite the efforts of many faithful, I-1000 Death with Dignity was approved in November by Washington state voters 58 percent to 42 percent, and went into effect May 6, 2009, making it legal for doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of medication for patients with less than six months to live

Cake-Spin Booth at the Church Bazaar
By Rose Pederson, Chairman
Our cake spin booth is taking on a different look this year. We are having a CDA Bakery as the theme for our booth. Please bring a homemade baked good (cakes, pies or cookies) to the booth Sunday morning only. I am so appreciative of the ladies who are working hard on this project Jo Short, Joan Rhemann, Jacque Holchak and Dorothy Pospisil. And thank you also to the ladies who have volunteered to work in the booth at the bazaar.
Scrap Book
The scrapbook is a very important activity which the court participates in. It captures the activities of the court in pictures, text, or other means. It is so much fun to look at previous scrapbooks to relive past memories.
There is a contest in scrap booking among different courts. This contest is governed by a set of rules on how to organize, categorize and present the different activities of the court. Adherence to these rules is very important in order for the scrapbook to win. The next scrapbook will be judged during the state convention in Houston, 2011.
We want to thank Betty Overgoner who was chair of this committee for 2007-2009. Our scrapbook won 3rd place at the last convention in McAllen, with the Shiner court winning 1st place, and the East Bernard court winning 2nd place.
We also want to acknowledge the other members who have painstakingly worked on this job before, i.e. Amelia Burke, Gay Collette, Norma Locker, Janice Rejsek, etc.
For the next two years (2009-2011), Kathy Poncik has accepted the Chair of the Scrapbook. Let us pray that she be given the inspiration, energy, and time to create a memorable one.
National Council of Catholic Women Convention (NCCW)
All members of Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) are invited to attend the NCCW convention onSeptember 23-27, 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida. Every year ACCW awards a scholarship to one member of the Deanery to attend the convention. The scholarship pays for the registration, transportation, hotel, and banquet.
Your Regent was offered this scholarship to attend the convention and has humbly accepted the offer.
The next meeting of ACCW-Galveston-Houston is on August 25, 2009 at St. Dominic Center in Houston. The Regent will be out of town on this day but Joyce Bartos and Janey Schumacher will attend to represent the Western Deanery.
Review of Standing Rules
It is stated under I. Governance, section h, page 1 that the Standing Rules should be reviewed at the start of the year. Please study the Standing Rules and voice any modifications (changes, inclusions, deletions) at the September meeting. An Ad Hoc committee will be formed if the modification(s) need some in depth deliberations.
CDA Sunday on October 18thYes, it is not too early to be thinking of how we are going to celebrate the theme of For in Him, we live and move and have our being. We shalll need a chairman to chair this event.
Centennial Celebration of First Court in Texas, November 7, 2009 in Austin, TX
Court Maria Galante # 115 in Austin, TX is the host of this centennial celebration with a luncheon and mass. Reservations for the luncheon are due on October 1, 2009 at a cost of $30.00/person. Attendance of the mass at 5:30 PM same day is purely voluntary. Officers attending are requested to wear their robes and white shoes. Those who wish to participate can give the luncheon fee to Pat Schimara, Treasurer, by September 27.
We hope our court members will participate in the celebration of this important occasion.
June Salad Supper
We had a well attended June Salad Supper with different kinds of salads brought by the members.
The winners of the Education Contest and the Mary Parsons Scholarship were all invited and most of them were present. It was so nice to hear the children share the inspiration and thoughts which guided them in producing their winning entry. Chairs for these contests are Patti Kocich and Doris Gurecky.
We also honored Father Bill for being our Chaplain the past ten months. Alma Slawinski read a poem entitled The beautiful hands of a priest. We also gave him a mass card, a monetary gift and a dinner certificate to Western Steakhouse. He thanked everyone and was glad to have the certificate because he has not visited this eating place.
Judy Janecka, winner of the Adult Poetry contest read her winning entry which is shown below.
Gods Gifts In My Life
By Judy Shimek Janecka
I stand at the foot of the cross and see the greatest of Gods gifts ever given to me;
The gift of your Son, a treasure untold, a gift more precious than silver or gold.
A thorny crown upon His head, His body beaten, His blood shed,
Mocked and insulted- bruised by our sin, defeating evil, the final victory so to win!
With a mothers heart broken, with love unspoken,
Holding him near, stricken with strife in torment you watched Him die.
What can I say? I can never repay, the sacrifice made, the price you paid,
In gifting me the most awesome of Gods Gifts in My Life?

Humor Section - “It’s Hard to Get Old”
Couple in their nineties is both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember...
Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'
'Sure....’
'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks...
'No, I can remember it.'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too.
Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?'
He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'
'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.
Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'
Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs... She stares at the plate for a moment.
'Where's my toast?'
