A Note from the Regent

Welcome to the start of another year of working together and sharing as we continue to serve the Lord with the inspiring help of our Blessed Mother.

It is with deep humility and anticipation that I have accepted this position and serve as your Regent for the next two years. I have not been an officer of this Court although I have been a member for 18 years and have actively participated in most of the activities. Being new to this position I will rely on the help and support of everyone so that I may serve each one justly, patiently and with care.

We have a lot of tasks ahead of us. There are various areas where leadership is needed as in the Circle of Love, different committees, and special events. I hope I will see a show of hands to volunteer for these needs.

Norma Locker

Worthy Regent

National News

National Convention

The National Convention was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 16-20, 2008. Court Holy Rosary 1476 was represented by the following delegates: Norma N. Locker, Helen Torres, Cathy Bittner, and Amelia Burke. (See Report in this Newsletter)

Campus Courts

It has been reported that we now have 10 CDA Courts on college campuses in the US. If you know any ladies going to college who would be interested in instituting a Campus Court, please contact the State Officers or National Officers for information.

Circle of Love

The Circle of Love program is gathered to assist Catholic Daughters in working with the church and community. It is a seven point program bound together by the common interest - Love. Local Courts are asked to select those portions of the programs that their members feel comfortable working on in their area. No court can begin to work on all phases of Circle of Love or else fail in its endeavor.

The 1903 Society

The purpose of this Society is to ensure the preservation of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas National headquarters, located in a historic landmark districk of New York City.

Three levels of membership are available:

  1. Annual Member $19.03 - $190.29
  2. Five Year Member - $190.30-1902.99
  3. Perpetual Member - $1903.00 +

Editors Note: It is interesting to note how 1903 was used in the quote for cost of membership.

60th Anniversary Celebration

The Court celebrated its 60th anniversary on June 3, 2008 with Libby Ramirez as the guest speaker. Also present was Dorothy Boehme who was a member of the court originally, now residing in Victoria, Texas.

Libby congratulated the court for being strong and advised everyone to be willing to the participate in State and National projects, e.g. Habitat for Humanity. She recognized the Charter Member honorees for the celebration namely: Dorothy Ryan, Margaret Humpola, and Lydia Eicher. Velasta Miller, the 4th honoree could not attend the evening celebration.

Installation of New Officers for 2008-2010

The Court was fortunate to have Libby Ramirez, National Regent Elect and Alma Slawinski, District Deputy # 10 install the following officers:

Worthy Regent Norma Locker

Vice Regent - Beverly Waddle

Recording Secretary - Jeanette Rehak

Financial Secretary - Charlotte Carlson

Treasurer - Pat Schimara

Support for Junior CDA

Did you know that even if our court does not have a Junior CDA, we are assessed $0.10 per member to help support the JCDA StateCourt with their expenses and their activities?

State News

Memorial Mass

A CDA Memorial Mass for all deceased members will be on November 15, 2008 at St. Helen Church in Pearland. This will be a combined mass with the Knights of Columbus, District 1, Fourth Degree. A nominal fee of $6.00 per member attending is required and is due on October 7.

New State Project Selected

Covenant House Texas, located in the heart of the Montrose area of Houston, provides emergency shelter, crisis intervention, and transitional housing to homeless, runaway, throwaway, and at-risk youths under the age of 21. They provide food, clothing, shelter, and services including health care. This is a worthy project which the Court can consider to help. Chair of the project is Lillian Hansen, and co-Chair is Cathy Bittner.

Officers Training

Training of newly elected officers in Districts 10, 28, and 37 will be on September 6, 2008 in Columbus, Texas from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. All officers must be trained on the duties of their offices. It is open to officers and also members who would like to know more about CDA. Would you like to attend the training? The fee is only $4.00/person.

Financial Review

The State Regent reported that after reading the financial reviews sent to her that there are some Courts holding on to large amounts of money which can send red flags up for the IRS. Courts with more than $4,000 in excess of anticipated expenses (e.g. scholarships, conventions) should consider some charitable donations.

Reception for Libby Ramirez

Texas State Board is sponsoring a mass and dinner/reception for Libby Ramirez on September 27 in Corpus Christi. Hotel Rate is $89.00/nite plus tax and cost of meal is $35.00/person. Please call your Regent or any of the officers for more information. Deadline is September 15 for meal reservations.

Church Bazaar, August 24, 2008

A huge THANK YOU to the members who have volunteered to work at the CAKE SPIN BOOTH. The slate is full so we will not be showing it in the back of the church this year. Each of the volunteers will receive a reminder call. We have changed the times to work from 2 hours to 1 hours to allow more participation from our members. To all members: Please bring HOMEMADE CAKES (NO COOKIES) to the gym early Sunday morning. We will NOT be accepting them on Saturday.

Catholic Daughter Of The Year

The members are going to vote for the Catholic Daughter of the Year in the September meeting and will be awarded in October. Come and vote for a fellow sister who has contributed significantly for the good of our court.

CDA Sunday

The theme for CDA Sunday which will be held on October 19 is "Women Embracing the Gift of Humanity." Martha Krolczyk and Grace Guidry have agreed to chair this event. Marian Hall has been reserved on this day should the members need it.

Standing Rules Review

There is a need to review the Standing Rules to incorporate some of the changes which have been approved and to review/update line items to meet the current needs of the Court. Therefore, we need to create an Ad Hoc committee to perform this task. Jill Sumpter has volunteered to chair this committee. Jill will need 4 or more members to help. It has been proposed to make the standing rules a controlled document which means that it has to be revised when there is a change. This document will be properly identified with a revision number and revision date.

Adoptive Family

Our adoptive family consists of a mother and 3 children. Their clothes sizes are as follows:

  • Mother - Size 14-16
  • Daughter, age 11 - Size 10-12
  • Daughter, age 5 - Size 6
  • Daughter, age 2 - Size 3

Donations of new or slightly used clothes and non-perishable goods are welcome. Please bring them to the meeting. Chairs for this committee (Mary Beth Haas and Gloria Zdunkewicz) will deliver them to the family.

A REPORT ON THE 52ND CDA BIENNIAL CONVENTION,

July 16-20, 2008 Albuquerque, New Mexico by Norma N. Locker, Worthy Regent

The delegates to this convention were Helen Torres, Cathy Bittner, Amelia Burke and Norma Locker. Helen and Norma flew via Southwest Airlines (2 hours flight) while Cathy and Amelia drove to Albuquerque (2 days). All of us stayed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel using 2 double rooms. The Hyatt is also the site of the convention which made it convenient in attending the sessions.

Claudia Bosch, National Regent, presided over the Sessions in a very professional manner following the Rule of the Order. She was assisted by Cecina Koeijmans, Parliamentarian, who was at her side and advised her on questions that arose. The Credentials committee was kept busy ensuring that a quorum is present and verifying the credentials of each delegate for the election. Delegates were seated in groups by state. Due to a large number of attendances, tables were not available at the sessions. Delegate badges were worn and made visible at all meetings. Alternates and visitors were seated in a separate section of the room.

All motions were written on a standard form provided and signed by the proponent. Only members of the voting body were allowed to introduce and to second motions. Six microphones were available to the delegates to make a motion or to debate an issue. Timekeepers were assigned at all sessions to keep the discussions moving in a timely fashion. Discussion on any issue was limited to 20 minutes. A delegate could end the debate by saying I move the question.

There was a mass celebrated everyday of the convention and all were breath taking. The music was enhanced by a soloist with an excellent voice. The crowning of the Virgin Mary and the Living Rosary was a first time affair in the convention. The 28 clergy men and representatives from each State participated in the Living Rosary. At the Memorial mass, Libby Ramirez read the opening memorial prayer and the Meditations which included the words We give them back to you, O Lord, who first gave them to us and as you did not lose them in the giving, and so we do not lose them in the return. The Installation mass on Saturday was very solemn as the National Officers and National Directors were installed by Reverend Monsignor Gerald J. Walsh (CDA National Chaplain). It was an impressive sight to see the multitude of officers in their robes march to church and occupy almost of the church pews.

Election of National Officers and National Directors was held. It is now official we have a National Regent from Texas. One of the National Directors is also from Texas as well as one of the 7 members of the nominating committee. Come to the meeting to find out who these deserving ladies are.

Amendments to the Bylaws and Resolutions adopted will be discussed at the meeting. National Projects and Charities were discussed. Membership Report was given and prizes awarded to winning States. Circle Of Love Awards were given on each of the seven categories. Hear some of the winning activities and maybe we can think of a winning project for our Court.

More topics were taken at the convention and will be reported at the meeting.

Resolution No. 22, presented and adopted at the 52nd Biennial CDA Convention

RESOLVED, That all courts be encouraged to recite the following prayer at each Regular meeting:
