A Note from the Regent
At the Valentine Membership Drive five new members joined our court. We have started a new program where each new member will have a “buddy” or mentor to assist her in adjusting to the operation and different programs of the court. It is very gratifying that this “buddy” system was highly received by the regular members. Each new member will now have a fellow sister who among other things: will remind them of the meetings and other activities, explain what the committees are all about, involve them in the committees, and have fun. We hope that this new program will encourage other women in the community to join.
The holy season of Lent is upon us. “What are you going to give up?” is a common question one hears. It is either you ‘commit’ or ‘omit’ or a combination of actions in the spirit of sacrifice. One can omit watching TV and commit to reading the bible. Another commitment is to attend the weekly stations of the cross and also join in the fellowship at the KC fish fry. Remember these are all short-lived gifts to God. We need to think of how we can become a better person not only during Lent but everyday of our lives.

National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW)
“Lead with Love” is the theme of Patty Johnson’s editorial in the NCCW magazine Catholic Women Jan-Feb 2010 issue. Excerpts from her article states that “…Love is the basis for service - it is the impetus that drives us on to do more, care more, and live more fully our baptismal promises. Love gives us the courage we need to overcome shyness, the wisdom we need to temper boldness, and the guidance we need to positively impact the world around us.”
She continues “…Love creates opportunity for service. The desire to serve is magnified and multiplied within a loving heart, and the heart that loves is the heart that serves…..”
(Ed’s note: Limited copies of this article will be available at the March meeting)

Pat Schimara, Janey Schumacher, and Katherine Frybert. Those who were elected as alternates were: Cathy Bittner, Amelia Burke, Norma Locker, Charlotte Carlson, Joyce Bartos, Helen Torres, and Patsy Harlan.

We want to commend those who are willing to attend and represent our court to this important event. Remember that when you vote, you are voting on behalf of the whole court.
Bring back to the court all the good news you gathered from the convention and be safe.
Valentine Membership Drive
About 60 members attended the event and five new members joined the court, with two more potential members in attendance.
Carolyn Malik, 1st Vice State Regent, was the guest speaker at this Valentine social. She talked about the 7 branches of the Circle of Love program namely: Leadership, Spiritual Enhancement, Quality of Life, Youth/JCDA, Education, Legislation and Charitable Projects. These are the seven areas in which the Catholic Daughters work with the church and the community. The Circle of Love logo is shown below:

ACCW (Archdiocesan Council for Catholic Women) Board Meeting January 26, 2010
Donna Yanowski, First Vice President presided over the meeting. Some of the important events taken up were: the reports from the President of different deaneries, reports from the different commission chairs, and the treasurer’s report. Announcement for the General Assembly was made which will be held on either April 17 or 24th at St Mary’s Church in La Porte. The theme of the General Assembly is “Moving Forward with Faith and Joy”. The Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF) will be the host for the evening banquet.
Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF)
At the ACCW meeting, President Marie Walsh announced that 4 burses have been completed which were for Margaret Sheltz, Charles and Adela Hrcek, Rev. Mr. Denis Smaistrla, and Rita Miller Fason.
The burse for Father Bill Bartniski is still open and will need more donations to complete. All recipients of completed burses (as mentioned above) will be honored at the banquet at the general assembly in April.
President Marie Walsh also announced that the Annual CCSF Meeting with Cardinal DiNardo will be March 7, 2010 at St. Mary’s Seminary. Mass is at 10 AM with brunch immediately following.
Holy Rosary Religious Education
The Court has agreed to donate financial assistance to the Youth Conference Fund to help the students attend the Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference, Archdiocesan Youth Conference, and Shine Catholic Work Camp this summer.
According to Tina Hollopeter, Director of Religious Education, they need to raise $17,000 to offer the teens more opportunities to connect with the Church and the community.
The court believes in “investing in the youth” and we wish them luck in this year’s events.
Mark your calendar: Generation of Faith is sponsoring a Seder meal on March 14, 2010 at the Family Center. Guest Presenter will be Sister Madeleine Grace.
If you have not attended a Seder meal, try to attend this one so you will experience this Jewish tradition.
Read Across America
Court Holy Rosary will participate in the Read Across America celebration with Shirley Myers as the chairman. She will request some members to join her to read to the children at a designated date.
A report will be submitted to Anne Martin, State Chairman, Read Across America
Lent Season
During the Lenten season, we shall not have any refreshments during our meeting. Instead, Cathy Bittner, Spiritual Enhancement chairman will lead us in a prayer service at 6:45 PM before our regular meeting.
Prayer for lent
Heavenly Father, out of love for us you sent your own son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, as our Savior. In Him, we are redeemed and saved.
Despite our weakness and sinfulness we wish to imitate Him, and to follow His footsteps. Send your Holy Spirit we implore you, to assist us as we make the way of the cross.
We invoke the aid of our Blessed Lady and of all the saints that we may be enabled to follow Christ, and to make His way of the cross our way of life and love. Amen.
Charities
a) Mission of Mercy: Cathy Bittner and Frances Michulka reported on their recent trip to Cameron Colonia. They were able to bring various food, clothing, and tools to help their operations. A significant comment was that the school operates on very meager resources.
b) The court has agreed to send a monetary contribution to Cameron Colonia in Brownsville to help defray the cost of children’s meals and other expenses.
c) Support for the Unborn The Rosary for the Unborn has opened our eyes to some of the events happening around us. Matthew and Melissa Picci, Representatives from 40 years of Life discussed the existence of a 7 story building for Planned Parenthood in Houston. They also informed the group that scholarships are available for students who want to be spokesmen for campaign for life.
d) The court has agreed to send a monetary contribution to Pregnancy Resource Center to help them in their needs.
e) Pat Schimara, Treasurer, has sent our contribution to the five National Projects. In the March meeting we shall talk about our contribution to the 9 National charities.
Confirmation
Our Court will once again host the reception for the confirmants, their families and guests on April 18, 2010. Reception will be held at the Parish Hall immediately after the confirmation which is at 3:30 PM in church.
Please help in welcoming our new “Children of God” and their relatives.
Don’t Blow It
Oh, workman or scholar,
Hang on to your dollar,
And do not spend it soon.
For every cent,
Unwisely spent,
Inflates the price balloon.

Joyeux Anniversaire
Humor Section
From Father Rupert ( at the Court Maria Galante 100th anniversary)
A neighbor was mowing his lawn when he accidentally mowed off the tail of a cat hiding in the bushes. He rapidly lifted the cat and went to another neighbor’s house.
“I accidentally cut the tail of my cat, can you take me to the veterinarian?”
“No”, the neighbor said. “Take him to Wal-Mart”
“Why Wal-mart, when the veterinarian is just around the corner”
The neighbor quipped:” Don’t you know they are the best re-tail-er in town?”
From Carolyn Bachman (at the State Convention in McAllen)
Nine men and one woman were hanging on a rope tied to a helicopter. Unfortunately, only nine could be sustained by the rope.
So the woman explained that she should be the one to give up because she is a wife & mother. She has a lot of children and is used to giving way for the family needs. She understands the situation very well and is very willing to sacrifice for the rest of the group…
After the long speech from the woman… all the men clapped!
