June 2009 newsletter

A Note from the Regent

This is our last issue for this year before we go on a 2-month vacation.  I hope you enjoyed every issue of the newsletter because the editor has enjoyed sharing the news and events every month.  Enjoy your summer with your family and friends.  We hope we do not forget our spiritual obligations however we use our time.

This coming 2 months will be a good time to reflect upon the activities we did the past 10 months, both what was good and what was not so good.  It was a productive and fruitful 10 months and a very enjoyable journey as we learn and work together as a team.  My heartfelt thanks to everyone for making my job a satisfying experience.

At the last state convention, Sheila Martinka was elected as the next State Regent for 2009-2010.  She is a very energetic, quick and talented 3rd generation CDA member from Deer Park.  Gone will be Carolyn Bachmann’s motto of “Together We are Strong” ( Eccl. 4:9).  Enter Sheila’s motto of “Do whatever He tells you…” (John 2:5).

Norma N. Locker

Worthy Regent

Outstanding dues - Help needed!

We are now assessed for membership dues for 223 members as of March 2009 by National Headquarters.  Soon to follow will be the assessment from the State Court.  Charlotte Carlson, Financial Secretary, reports that 42 members or 18.8% have not paid.  This does not include those who are life-time members or those whom the court voted to be exempt from paying.  If you have not paid please do so now.  We need your help!!!

More State Convention News

At the May meeting  the delegates gave their 2-minute reports and here are some of salient points reported:

  • Items included in the budget and approved by the court members do not need to be approved again when disbursements occur.
  • “Whose job is it anyway?”  When this question arises, the answer is “Everyone”;  not just the chair and the members of the committee.
  • A very informative and humorous skit was presented illustrating do’s and don’ts to observe during the fund raising process.
  • Regents should not express their opinion in the meeting, nor vote.  Those at the head table should not talk while the meeting is going on, nor the members in the floor.  Always seek recognition of the Regent before speaking.
  • Ways & Means Chair reported almost $28,000 was raised from the fund raising (some figures still not in.  188 courts participated in the raffle.  The first prize in the raffle ($1,000) was won by Christ the King Court in Houston.

June Salad Supper & Meeting

Members are reminded of the Salad supper on June 2, 2009 in the Cafeteria at 6:30 PM before the meeting.  We shall also honor the Education Contest winners and the Mary Parsons Scholarship winners.  Let us make these fine young people welcome to our court.

The first Sunday of June has been designated by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas as PRIEST APPRECIATION DAY.  We have included the name of Father Bill in the Eucharistic Liturgy offered monthly at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.  We shall also honor him at our meeting in our own humble way.  Everyone come and be a part of these events.

Remembering the homebound

We have a number of sisters who are homebound in nursing homes or their own homes who would appreciate an occasional visit.  This would be a good ministry since one can do it in their free time with no requirements on how often it is accomplished.   A volunteer will be needed to coordinate the visits and as well as volunteers to make the visits.

Here is a list of our homebound sisters.  If anybody was missed, please let us know.

Vlasta Miller & Georgia Lehman – Cambridge Nursing Home (near George Library)

Leona Vincek -  Greatwood Retirement Center

Margaret Humpola, Hattie Ries, Kathleen Lindsey – In their own homes.

Humor Section-   The Sneeze

Contributed by Jo Short

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium.  With their rich maroon gowns flowing… and the traditional caps, they looked almost ... as grown up as they felt.

Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT pray during the commencements----not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine.....until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!

The student on stage.. simply looked at the audience and said,  “GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you!' And he walked off stage....
The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.
