October 2009 newsletter

A Note from the Regent

Last month, on September 8, we celebrated the birth of our Blessed Mother, and in October we celebrate the month of the rosary and respect for life.  We usually have a novena in church every Wednesday in October by reciting the rosary and benediction.

What a nice way of honoring her the whole month of October.  But we should not only honor Mary during this month, daily recitation of the rosary would be a worthy habit to develop.

The rosary is a powerful weapon against temptation and danger; it is a sure way of getting close to Jesus and Mary as we meditate on the different mysteries.

October is also respect for life month.  Let us remember in our daily prayers the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death.

CDA Sunday will be celebrated this year with a combined attendance of the four courts from District 10.  We hope to establish a tradition where we attend the liturgical mass together and have a simple reception afterwards.  The objective is to establish a closer relationship between our sisters in the neighboring courts to be truly bound in “Unity and Charity”.  Court Holy Rosary # 1476 welcomes our sisters from Needville, Rosenberg, and Pattison on October 18, 2009.

Norma N. Locker

Worthy Regent

District 10 CDA Sunday Celebration, October 18, 2009, 9:00 am Mass at Holy Rosary Church.  Reception follows immediately.   Family members and guests are welcome.

National News

State Regent’s Conference

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL was the site of this conference which was held on July 9-12, 2009.  The National Board presented workshops to assist the State Officers in the successful operation of the State and Local Courts.  The first draft of the Tools of the Trade Procedure Handbook was given to State Regents for their input.

Five National Charitable Projects

Libby Ramirez, National Regent recommends the membership to support the five (5) National Charitable Projects.  A monetary gift of $15 per project or $75.00 will help support the various charities of the organization.

White Ribbon Against Pornography (WRAP)

October 25 to November 1, 2009 has been proclaimed by Morality in Media (MIM) as White Ribbon for Pornography week.  In a sample proclamation, MIM states that pornography:

  • “degrades and dehumanizes both female and male participants,
  • presents youth with a distorted and debased image of human sexuality
  • leads males and females of all ages into sexual addictions that prevent, harm and tear marriages apart
  • children molest other children in imitation of what they see in pornography.”

Letter sent to AARP by MIM President

A letter was sent to AARP by Mr. Robert Peters, MIM President to remove the advertisement for Better Sex Videos in the AARP bulletin.  Better Sex Videos is connected to Phil Harvey, founder of Adam and Eve, which is the nation’s largest pornography business.

National CDA Sunday, October 18, 2009

Evelyn Saxton, National Spiritual Enhancement Chairman, wrote the Proclamation for this event which can be used by local courts.  The theme for this year is “For in Him, we live and move and have our being”.  The main intention for this Sunday is to pray for vocations.

Message from Immediate Past National Regent

Claudia Bosch, Immediate Past National Regent sends her thanks for the many cards, flowers, prayers and get well wishes for her knee surgery.  She said “I had bilateral knee surgery on January 19th.  Since both knees required replacement, I selected to do them both at the same time because I was afraid if I only did one, I may not go back to do the other one.”

First 100 days of the New Administration in D.C.

The news for life issues in the first 100 days of the Obama Administration are not very promising as shown below:

  • Federal funds to be used for embryonic stem cell research
  • Draft guidelines for embryonic stem cell research met with adverse reaction from pro-life community
  • Sale of Plan B Morning-After Pill expanded to 17 year olds without a prescription.
  • Considering rescinding Conscience Protection Regulations.

FOCA -  Freedom of Choice Act

Be vigilant because there is still the threat that FOCA could be introduced again.  Keep your eyes and ears open.

Welcome,  Margaret Sitte

Margaret Sitte was introduced to the State Officers at the State Officer’s Conference in Belleville, Illinois as the new National Legislation Chairman starting on August 1, 2009.  She replaces Helen Johnson who retired after nine years of service in this post.

State News

Message from Texas State Regent

Sheila Martinka, newly elected State Regent, has introduced two new state chairmanships under her term.  One is the State chairman for Campus Courts which will be chaired by Barbara Britton from San Antonio.  The second one is the State chairman for  Activities which will be chaired by Barbara Molloy.  Her co-chairman will be Fran Ewart.  Both are from Austin.

Quarterly Prayer Intentions

These prayer intentions can be remembered in the opening and closing prayer of the meeting or by each individual in her daily prayers:

  • That all women will generously open their hearts to God’s invitation to serve His people.
  • That all the faithful will grow in respects for God’s gift of life.

St. Bernardine of Siena Awards

At the last convention in McAllen, Sheila Martinka, then First Vice State Regent and Court Development chair recognized  ten (10)  courts with this award for their accomplishments of increasing the membership of the CDA sisterhood.

St Bernardine of Siena is the Patron Saint of Public Relations.  Born in 1380 his career was devoted to recruitment, eloquent preaching and the writing of homilies.

New Texas CDA Share Forum

The administrator of the Texas CDA website, Teresa Maltbia is inviting everyone to join this Forum.  It will be a great way to share what you know and love about Texas CDA.  Those who have access to the internet can access this program from the website.  The link is shown in this page.

Texas State Website: www.texascda.org

State Chairman for Campus Courts- Barbara Britton

This new committee will take care of the six campus courts in Texas.  The goal is to assist the campus courts to come together by initiating activities such as a “meet and greet” gathering, a mini workshop or retreat.  The chair will work with the District Deputies who have campus courts.

State Chairman for Activities -  Barbara Molloy

The State Regent has coined a new meaning for CDA:

“Couch Divas Always”.  The State Chairman for activities will try to push everyone out of inactivity and will give ideas on how we can be motivated to improve our physical health.

On Leadership

Here are some suggestions for leadership improvement submitted to the State Leadership Chairman:

  • Delegate members to work on different projects that match their interests.
  • Do not micro-manage your members after you assign them to duties and committees
  • Organize court members into small groups with one member serving as the leader
  • Encourage members to attend National and State Conventions

In sympathy….

Sheila Martinka extends her thanks for the love and support she received on the loss of her grandmother,  Martha Martinka.  Her grandmother passed away at the time of the convention in McAllen.  It was a difficult decision for her to remain for the duration of the convention during this difficult time.  She greatly appreciates all of the love and care extended to her at that time.

Rosary Making at Court Holy Rosary # 1476

By  Janey Schumacher

The court members continuously make rosaries for missions all over the world.  Recently 2,600 rosaries were given to Johanna for the Medical Mission in El Salvador.  So far, the court has given away 29,801 rosaries.

More rosaries are needed for the mission in Guatemala (November) and the Philippines (October).  These rosaries were requested by the nuns in Houston and Father Paul Manzano, respectively.

“Job Well Done, Mary Ondrush”

Mary Ondrush was chair of the Apostolate committee for the past 20 consecutive years.  She has handled this committee very efficiently and was well received at the nursing home by the staff and the residents.  She practically knew all the residents at the Bamore Nursing Home and it was a joy to watch her exchange pleasantries with each of them.  Job well done, Mary!

Our new Apostolate committee chair is Gloria Mican.  We hope you will give support and extend a hand when she calls for volunteers to visit the nursing home.

Cake Spin Booth at the Church  Bazaar, August 23,2009

By Rose Pederson

A huge thank you is extended to the ladies who spent a lot of time and talent to make our cake spin cake spin booth a success.  We received the blue ribbon for first place for our “Bakery “ theme.

My committee ladies were Jo Short, Joan Rhemann, Jacque Holchak and Dorothy Pospisil.  Jo made the skirt and valance, ruffles on the aprons and helped to create the wall hanging.  Dorothy Pospisil decorated the beautiful wedding cake and cupcakes with the help of her husband, Herman. We also wish to thank Bee Unique and Cathy Bittner for donating the pocket aprons and embroidering the CDA Bakery lettering on the wall hanging.

A thank you also goes out to the ladies who helped man the booth and to all those who donated baked goods and monetary gifts. We had 113 participants. Thank you to our booth sponsors: Pat Shimara, Albert Locker and Al Calub, and Court Holy Rosary #1476.

The total expenses to Court Holy Rosary  #1476 was:  $252.18. We took in $319.00 in cash and checks and $1,213.00 in tokens making a total of $1,532.00 which will be donated to the church.

Adoptive Family

Our adoptive family moved to Mexico last summer.  Mary Beth Haas and Gloria Zdunkewicz , committee chairs, are in contact with St. Vincent de Paul to get another family.

Christmas Party

Mark your calendars!  At the September meeting, court members agreed to hold our Christmas Party on December 11, 2009, Friday at 6:30 PM at KC Hall.  Jeanette Rehak and her committee will present some details on what we are going to eat and do at this party.  This change of date will allow our court chaplain the opportunity to attend our party.  This was not possible in previous years when the date of the party would conflict with the confession circuit.

The Making of Our Newsletter

A lot of time and talent is expended in the making of our newsletter especially we have the electronic and the hard copy forms.  Let us outline the jobs which various people contribute into the newsletter before it reaches the recipients every month.

Humor Section:  Acts 2:38

A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an intruder.

She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled: 'Stop! Acts 2:38!' (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.)

The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done.

As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: 'Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.'

'Scripture?' replied the burglar. 'She said she had an ax and two 38s!'
