November 2009 newsletter

A Note from the Regent

Our main thrust this month of November is the Memorial Mass on Monday, November 2. We shall remember our members who passed away in 2009 as well as the other deceased members.  Let us also remember our deceased regents, chaplains and district deputies and all the souls in purgatory.

Norma N. Locker

Worthy Regent

Reminder

December 1 there is NO Court meeting. Our Christmas Party is December 11, 2009 at the KC Hall.

National News

One of the resolutions approved at the National Board Meeting in Belleville, Illinois, July 8-10, 2009, was the resolution supporting priests.  It was resolved that CDAreaffirm their continued support for priests and seminarians.  It was also resolved that CDAcourts be encouraged to use the Prayer for the Year of the Priest at their court meetings.  (Source:  September, 2009 National Newsletter)

State News

Here is an excerpt from Father Ruppert’s Message:  “Texans are accustomed to “BIG”; and CDA is no exception.  Our State Regent needs 55 (or so) deputies to assist her in governing the multitude of courts in Texas.  Some states have so few courts that the State Regent can visit them without any district deputies.

CDA in Texas is a well-oiled machine that is second in size only to the National Court.  We have to be careful that we never let this “go to our heads……….”

Catholic Clerical Student Fund

The Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF) is a special committee of ACCW which has the responsibility of receiving the mass enrollments every month.  CSSF helps support the St Mary’s Seminary.

The mass enrollments and donations received by CCSF are grouped into ‘Burses’.  Each Burse is $15,000 and can be named after a person, living or deceased.

We are happy to inform you that the request to sponsor a burse for our chaplain, Father Bill has been approved by the Cardinal.  Marie Walsh, President of CCSF wrote the letter and has received the approval.  As soon as the open working burse is completed, Father Bill’s burse will start.  Please watch for further announcements.

District 10 CDA Sunday Celebration, October 18, 2009

In an effort to promote cooperation in the spirit of Unity and Charity among the different courts in District 10, a combined corporate mass and reception was planned.  The celebration was hosted by Court Holy Rosary # 1476 in Rosenberg.  It was decided that a combined CDA Sunday celebration will be sponsored by each of the courts in the district.  The schedule is as follows:

2010 -  Court St. Isidore Patron of the Land, Needville

2011 -  Court Sister Mary Walters, Rosenberg

2012 -  Court Sacred Heart of Divine Mercy, Pattison

The light breakfast consisted of Kolaches, cheese, grapes and BBQ smokies.  A short program followed honoring the past and present District Deputies of District 10.  District Deputies present were given a yellow rose and a gift.  Those present were Alma Slawinski (present DD), Dorothy Pospisil, Elrose Kostak and Cathy Bittner.  Other past DD’s were having their own CDAcelebration and were not able to attend.

The theme of the celebration was

“For in Him, we live and move and have our being”.  (Acts 17:28)

Three old guys are out walking.
First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?'
Second one says, 'No, it's Thursday!'
Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer..'

Deceased members to be remembered are Margaret Rehak, Pauline Havelka, Betty Gaas, Cindy Brady, Annie Bell Morris, and other deceased members.

Catholic Daughter of the Year

Congratulations to Rose Pederson for being elected as 2009 Catholic Daughter of the Year.  Rose first became a member of Court Resurrection # 2054 in Bay Cityin June, 1983 and later transferred to our court in January 1995. She has been a CDA member for 26 years and has been very active in our court.  Well-deserved,  Rose.

Adoptive Family

By Gloria Zdunkewicz and Mary Beth Haas

Our adoptive family moved to Mexico last summer, therefore we made contacts to St.Vincent DePaul Society to request for another family.  The family assigned to our Court consisted of a  family of 5 originally.  However, on Thursday afternoon, October 1st, the mother passed away due to cancer, leaving her husband and three children ages 6, 11, 15.  The father is temporarily unemployed and they are desperately in need of financial help to pay for medical bills and other living expenses (utilities, rent, and etc.)

Christmas Party, December 11, 2009, KC Hall, starts 6:30 PM

The Chairman of our Christmas Party is Jeanette Rehak; Co-chairs are Janey Schumacher, Janice Rejsek & Mary Beth Haas, and Gloria Mican. The committee is busy planning all the details so that everyone will enjoy this special occasion.

You can pay your reservations for the meal to Janey (281-232-8721) or any of the committee members.  Cost of the meal is $7.00/person to be catered by Lad’s Smokehouse. Meal will consist of tender roast beef, buttered potatoes, beans and tea.  Please make your checks payable to “Court Holy Rosary # 1476”.

Janice and Gloria will also need help with the appetizers and desserts.

NCCW Convention, September 23-27,

Jacksonville, Florida

Your Regent had the opportunity to attend this convention with no expense to the court since she was awarded a scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded to a member of the Deanery who has not attended a NCCW convention.

The format of the convention is similar to a CDA National convention with daily liturgies, business meetings, amendment of by laws and election of new officers.

Libby Ramirez was one of speakers at the convention as a representative of CDA which is a partner of NCCW.

Some of the topics presented at the convention were on human trafficking, de-greening the environment, how to handle a diverse church, how to encourage more members to join, how to be a “friend of WUCWO”.  It was so nice to meet other sisters in NCCW especially Karen Hurley, President General of WUCWO, Bobbie Hunt and Pat Johnson, outgoing and newly elected NCCW President, respectively.

WRAP Campaign

Our court participated in the White Ribbons Against Pornography (WRAP) campaign by distributing white ribbons to all parishioners at all the Sunday Masses on October 24 and 25, 2009.  The white ribbons signify that you recognize the damage that pornography does to families especially the children.  We should continue to fight pornography on the Internet & TV, in the mail and local stores.

Prayer Line

The court’s prayer line is open not only to court members and their families but to anyone who needs prayers.  The recipients can be friends or relatives, Catholics or non Catholics. The prayer line consists of about 100 CDA members who have volunteered to pray for a recipient when called upon.

Chairman Mary Barcak requests that permission from the person concerned must be obtained to respect his or her privacy.  Mary will attempt to confirm requests for prayers but the responsibility to obtain the consent rests upon the informer.

Anyone who wishes to be included in the prayer line may call Mary Barcak at 281-232-2463.
